ContactOctober 1-8, 2010 Peru - History, Culture and Photography of the Andes
Immerse yourself in the history and culture of the Inca people. Discover the past and how it has tempered the present. Martin Chambi (1891-1973) recorded much about the Andean landscape and his people in his 20th century photographs which have been compared to that of Ansel Adams in our country. This truly unique travel opportunity includes spending an entire day with his grandson, Teo Chambi who is also an accomplished photographer. He will lead us through the streets of Cuzco, the markets, the square, the cemetery and the ruins; as we capture our own images within the contemporary society. We will have a private dinner with Teo and hear about his family’s efforts to memorialize his grandfather and create a museum in his honor. Exhibits of Martin Chambi’s work have been displayed in New York’s Museum of Modern Art and a film was produced for BBC, called “Martin Chambi and the Heirs of the Incas.” The film documented the life and art of Martin Chambi, a Peruvian Indian who was one of the century's most important photographers. It resulted in many Peruvian Indians increased awareness of their history and greatness.
At Machu Picchu we will capture the moments of the ever changing light. We will visit small towns to see village life then and now. We will be guests at Peru’s largest Alpaca farm and spend the night. We will lunch with the Chahuaytire native community of weavers and view the “Tribute to the Mother Earth” ceremony of the Paru Paru native community. On our final day in Lima we will hear from the curator of the Larco Museum which showcases 3,000 years of Peruvian pre-Columbian history.
Join us on this adventure and record with all your senses and your camera the scenery, the tempo and the character of the Andes! This is an ‘expedition’ not a tour. We will maintain a schedule, but will make every attempt to remain flexible; to experience any unforeseen opportunities that will add flavor to this already colorful landscape and its society.
Trip cost $3,300/pp plus all airfares, taxes ans some meals.
