Svalbard, Land of the Ice Bears 2004
Svalbard, Land of the Ice Bears -- 600 miles from the North Pole
Both the main town and airport is called Longyearbyen. During our expedition to Arctic Norway, we explored an area approximately 600 miles from the North Pole (78-80 degrees N. latitude).  The weather during our trip was mostly beautiful and sunny, but with the ice and the sun (22+ hours a day!) there was a degree of fog. Temperatures were very comfortable for traveling -- with some days reaching the middle to upper 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Often a light fleece jacket was all that was needed.

Ice Bears and Wildlife
We observed a total of 22 bears during our week long expedition, along with countless birds, sea mammals and glacial scenery.

The air is crystal clean and clear -- I can't wait to return again next year!
